Today, we did an activity to help us review homonyms. Students had to choose the correct homonym to complete sentences. When they did, they were instructed to draw certain parts of a haunted house. Their pictures turned out great, and they got to practice using homonyms in the process!

Our class had Explorations with Mrs. Kraft this week. Students read sections of the Declaration of Independence and then had to use different ciphers to decode symbols putting the sections into more modern language. Using the modern language they answered questions about what the sections meant, and the answers gave them the final “lock” combination! Here are the students who were able to unlock the code!

Once or twice in every Math lesson, we do a "Think, Share, Compare" routine. This involves students analyzing the problem by finding out what they are trying to solve, and what the important information is. Students solve the problem using their own strategies, then share with a partner and with the whole class. They discuss how they solved the problem and give feedback to each other by agreeing, disagreeing, or adding to what someone else has said. This is all very student-led, and I don't (or I try not to!) say much. Pictured below is the problem students worked on today. They came up with 6 DIFFERENT WAYS to solve it. They also did a very good job of explaining the steps and sharing how the different strategies related to each other. Again, this is with very little talking from me! I am proud of these kids! Way to go class!

Today, we practiced the lost art of looking words up in a dictionary! Students had to make a prediction about a word's meaning, then find it in the dictionary to see if they were correct. They then had to come up with their own sentence to show that they understood what the word meant. They did a great job, and some actually enjoyed the challenge of finding the words!

For the past two days, we learned about characterization and how to analyze characters. Each group took one of the main characters from The Invention of Hugo Cabret and completed an analysis on that character. When they were finished sharing their ideas, they completed a poster describing their character.

We did it! We finished reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret today! This book was a monstrous 525 pages, and included 158 pictures and 26,159 words. These kids did an amazing job with this book, and I really enjoyed hearing the connections they were making with the text all throughout their reading! We also enjoyed learning more about one of the main characters, Georges Melies, who was a real filmmaker! It's safe to say that this book got two thumbs up from most of the class!

We did a STEM challenge today. The challenge was for each group to build the tallest free-standing tower they could, using only 100 index cards and 24 inches of masking tape. Yesterday, the groups spent time planning and discussing their approaches, and today was building day! Groups had 25 minutes to complete the challenge. It was a lesson in perseverance, flexibility, and teamwork. When the timer went off, Group 3 was the winner! They built a tower that stood 30 inches tall! Great job, everyone!

We did an art project inspired by Wassily Kandinsky. Students made concentric circles with bright colors. We also listened to music for inspiration as we worked, just like Kandinsky used to do!

Kole, Kaleb, and Nathan attempt to stuff toothpaste back into the tube! We used this illustration to talk about carefully choosing the words that we say. Just like toothpaste cannot be put back into the tube, our words cannot be unsaid once they come out of our mouths!
